Nothing in the Universe is static. In the milky way, billions of stars orbit the galactic center.
Some, like our sun, are pretty consistent, keeping a distance of around 30,000 light years from the galactic center, completing an orbit every 230 million years.

This dance is not an orderly ballet - more like a skating rink filled with drunk toddlers. This chaos makes the galaxy dangerous. Our solar neighbourhood is constantly changing, with stars moving hundreds of kilometers every second.

Only the vast distances between objects protect us from the dangers out there. But we might get unlucky in the future. At some point we could encounter a star going supernova. Or a massive object passing by and showering earth with asteroids.

If something like this were to happen we would likely know thousands, if not millions of years in advance. But we still couldn’t do much about it.

Unless… we move our whole solar system out of the way.

It doesn't seem to me that a shkadov thruster would actually work, unless I'm missing something. In order for it to stay in place relative to the sun, the radiation pressure needs to be equal and opposite to the gravitational pull. This doesn't get us anywhere, as there's no imbalance of force to cause any directional momentum. But if the radiation pressure is greater than the gravitational pull, thus causing an imbalance, there doesn't seem to be anything keeping the mirror from simply pulling away from the sun, only transferring an infinitesimal amount of momentum to the sun as it drifts away, being the much less massive object. In order for it to function the way you want it to there would have to be some sort of tethering force to get the sun to be pulled along with the mirror, but not gravity, because gravity is already being counteracted to keep the mirror in place relative to the sun. I might just be tired, and I am by no means a physics expert, but this just seems like a major oversight.

    • Raj Praveen

      Raj Praveen

      8 dögum síðan

Haha, it is doubtful that we could make gateways directly to other places in the galaxy, or even other universes in a mere 300-400 years. Reaching higher Kardeshev scale type civilizations is harder in terms of magnitudes than the current time periods. We don't know how the journey might be if we go higher than that. We are still slaves to the whims of gravity, whereas many ambitional projects like these require you to exceed and/or control gravity in a much more efficient way. For example: These require you to funnel the Sun's electromagnetic fields and bend them to your own liking, but currently a normal satellite without the necessary protection passing through Jupiter's electromagnetic fields can be fried in seconds. 😅😄 But yeah, we are still ambitious, and we are hopeful that we might reach these advancements.. 😊 Sorry for the long post, I just get so excited when talking about space 🌌😍

Wouldn’t it be like putting a ball under a thick blanket and lifting said ball? The ball will be suddenly higher than the rest of the blanket material around it.
Just realized will probably do this incredibly slowly, so perhaps gravity can maintain the plane. So in that case. It’s like lifting a wooden plate instead of blanket in my analogy.

There is literally no application for a stellar thruster. First, there are not enough materials in the solar system to build something on that level. The sun amounts to 99.8% of the mass of the entire solar system Even if you could use up all the materials of the planets, moons and asteroids how do you build a structure even remotely close to the size of the sun in order to move it? Second, if you could manage to do so, don't think for a second that orbits of all system objects would stay the same workout assistance. Initially they would elongate, even Earth and because masses are different they would be affected differently making it impossible to detect all millions of possible collisions that now become possible.
Most importantly, since we're talking about millions of years in the future, you have to consider that humanity (if it even if it remotely resembles human by then) will have better tech and science to simply colonize other systems rather than rescue a dying planet or star. Remember, we are as close to Australopithecus as we potentially are to our descendents capable of such achievements.
The folly is that we think of our distant future selves as being pretty close to what we are now. Our comprehension and tech is exploding and an exponential rate. And given our technological course, we may be more machine than any organic permutation. We may ultimately be sentient starships or even points of light in a million years.
