The observable universe is a big place that has been around for more than 13 billion years. Up to two trillion galaxies made up of something like 20,000 billion billion stars surround our home galaxy. In the milky way alone scientists assume there are some 40 billion earth like planets in the habitable zone of their stars. When we look at these numbers it is hard to imagine that there is nobody else out there.

The problem with Type Omega is that it justifies religion, which may not be bad on its own but considering how ass-backwards we’ve gotten at times due to it....

is that a Prismo reference near the end?

It would be kinda creppy if humans were to be found in another planet like a few light years away.

This video about aliens is SO MUCH BETTER than your other past ones concerning things like the Great Filter. I hate that flawed theory and so glad it wasn’t repeated in this one. Thank you!

It is interesting that he considers humans to be advanced compared to ants and ants advanced compared to bacteria since bacteria are more powerful than ants and ants are more powerful than humans. There is one category in which humans are far ahead of ants and bacteria: arrogance.

Type one versus type 4 civilization seems like rats vs modern humans.

Can you see sun in milky way?
Arshad Ali
Maybe we don't see signs of Type 2+ civilizations because these civilizations learned and understand the importance of conservation and the harmful effects of artificial influence on nature. They're taking explicit steps to avoid catastrophic events by making sure their presence doesn't disturb anything beyond what's necessary.

Let's put it like this
Humans *primary school*

So think of it as like every civilization is in stages, like years in a school. And we are slowly evolving.

Do you think a lower type 2 civilization could harness the power of the sun through other means? Like using the sun as fuel if it can be extracted and contained?
The Logical Twit
I have confusing feelings about this theory. I find it cool, but scary at the same time.
JoMan!
It's all relative, we might be omega civilization and our cell cores are just universes. Our universe might just be a cell core of another organism.
we might be omega civilization since we create bacteria/viruses in labs. We might be just a bacteria created by another species in the lab.
also we create virtual world like in pc games. We might just be a pc game for another species.
Brendan White
4:58 that scene is literally horrifying
A man of no reputation
A type three civilization could easily be right in our midst or even actively interacting with or controlling us and we would never know. A more advanced civilization than our own might not just be more powerful, but also more subtle. Who says they need megastructures? They may have figured out far less invasive ways of getting their energy fix or may have outgrown the need for material expansion such that they leave a very faint footprint.
Perhaps they know about us already and have intentionally distorted the information we have access to from Earth for our own good.
This possibilities require more assumptions than supposing that all alien civilizations are space capitalists, but I don't find the assumptions very compelling. I would be more confused (not to mention disappointed) to find that extraterrestrials are like us than not like us.
Monthon Sriyoscharti
Or some civilization may just live in peace.

Hey Kurzgesagt, I am very willing to purchase the merchandise and further support the channel, but am feeling the prices may be exaggerated.
Would you please consider lowering the price slightly, 15-20% perhaps and offer a Kurzgesagt duck tank top?
I need to flex on bicep curls and environmental knowledge, ya feel?
I want to do more with supporting the channel but currently find that difficult with the excessive merchandise prices.
Love the content, keep it up 👍

Borrowed Time
It's why the Kardashev Scale is not well accepted. It's too aggressive and civilizations that would spring from such have a tendency to be unstable and no last long.
Scaarliege
I think the reason we haven't discovered other species yet is because of the fact that any radiowaves or light takes time to travel and over time becomes dated meaning in basic terms we see the universe around us as it was in the past which means by the standards provided here we would not see another civilization in our solar system yet.

Here's a theory: All the greater celestial bodies in the universe could be considered Gods, except they're not intelligent at all - they're just unfathomably energetic and chaotic. Moreover, we are to the greatest celestial bodies what they are to galaxies what they are to the entire universe.
Being able to have control on such a seemingly infinite scale would require us to not only theorize that we can bypass the laws of physics as we know them, but also have the means to do so. That would require an intelligence so evolved that we could actually comprehend the concepts of the different plane of physics at our disposal. Not only that, but we would have to physically evolve into something equally as uncomprehensive.
calimari
Humanity likes to protect its ideals. In a country, for example, states argue, but when the country goes against another country, the entire country fights together. If we encounter another civilization, we'd forget all our arguments, and work together as one. Probably.
calimari
@Odysseus no lol, im not from the US. glad to see you share my opinion tho :)
Odysseus
I entirely agree with you. I just find funny that you would talk about states this way, might you be American by any chance? Coming from a country with a very centralised authority, I just wasn't expecting that kind of example 😂

I wonder what would happen if we rickrolled a type 1 civilization...

Andreas Derycke
Maybe there is now an type 3/4 in our galaxy but they are new and on the other side of the Milky Way and their light didnt reach us yet
Terry Peterson
Contact with other intelligent civilizations is next to impossible due to the vast distances involved. Our own galaxy is about 100,000 light years across, but even if our closest neighbors were "only" 100 light years away, it would take 100 years for just a message to reach them, then another 10 decades to get a reply. And unless they can travel faster than light speed, they wouldn't get here for thousands of years. FYI, in just one year, light travels roughly 6 trillion miles! And if there's intelligent life on the other side of our galaxy, you would have to multiply 6 trillion by 100,000! And that isn't taking into consideration all the billions if not trillions of other galaxies, which are moving away from each other constantly as space continues to expand. So yeah, there may be millions or untold trillions of other intelligent civilizations scattered throughout the universe that we will never, ever know about.
