Over the last decade milk has become a bit controversial. Some people say it’s a necessary and nutritious food, vital for healthy bones, but others say it can cause cancer and lead to an early death.
So who is right? And why are we drinking it anyway?

Also, it's barely touched upon in the video, but some environments are more prone to milk and dairy production than some others, in agricultural terms. For example, mountainous regions, or regions with very high rainfall are easier to use for mil and dairy than for, say, grain and cereal production, since you can't really put heavy machineries on steep slopes, or in waterlogged soils. Some regions' agriculture depend entirely on milk production, so the it's very intertwined with the social fabric. Also, the fact that ruminants eat grass means it does not necessarily compete for land that could be used for humans. And since their manure can be used as fertiliser, it also limits natural gas extraction to produce fertilisers, while also enriching the soil in terms of fauna.
Also, in France, cattles are used to graze mountain pastures in the summer, which make for better and safer ski slopes in the winter, since the snow is not just laid on thick but fragile grass blades, but directly on short grass, nearly at ground level, so there's that.
And also it's very good as well!
But there are obviously negative side effects, and negative farming and rearing practices, which could definitely be improved, that's for sure.

@Tom 441 Yes, sexed semen, that was the word I was looking for! With more research hopefully they'll find easier ways to produce it to make it less less expensive. It has always irked me how generalised most statements about the abuse of farm animals are. It causes people who live in countries with strict animal welfare rules to believe that the animals in said countries are being abused when it is simply not the case. They then are likely to treat farmers in these countries with contempt, despite the fact that these farmers *want* their animals to be happy, as it leads to a better product if nothing else.

    • Tom 441

      Tom 441

      6 dögum síðan

@Hedera in the uk we call it sexed semen. In 2020 more sexed artificial insemination semen was sold than conventional artificial insemination semen. I’m used to buy bull semen, I fist used sexed semen on my dairy cows back in 2003. It was commercially available for a couple of years before this . Admittedly it wasn’t very reliable back then, I got 50/50 males / females 🙄 The conception rate was much lower than conventional artificial insemination semen too, and 50% more expensive. In 2021 sexed semen will produce 90-95 % female calves. Interestingly I’ve always found that any male calves born to sexed semen do display female characteristics. Male sexed semen is also available for producing beef calves.

    • Hedera

@Tom 441 I live in Australia where we have some pretty strict laws and regulations in regards to the treatment of dairy cattle. The only issue I have with the dairy industry here is the culling of bully calves, which I think is horrible. However, with the research going into artificial insemination it's looking as though farmers will soon be able to reliably determine the gender of future calves, so this hopefully won't be a problem in the near future.

Yes, also if there are vets and suitable antibiotics and painkillers available to treat cows that get sick. It’s also important that a cow that is to old and sick to be treated is given a quick and painless death. I’ve heard that in backward countries such as India, this doesn’t happen and the cows suffer greatly before death.

Its good to switch to vegan milk in current situations.
Olden times where our ansestors used ro keep cows and get milk were natural.
Domesticated cows naturally produce extra milk then what its calf needs.
They were kept free ranging in many nations. Everything was sustainably managed.
Now its only profit based management. Milk is a poison by adding the stress in its milk the way they're kept with many antibiotics.
The baby milk is also snatched away.
