Getting to space is incredibly hard, expensive and needs a lot of resources.
A more efficient way to get there is a Skyhook (or Spacetether), an ever rotating cable with a counter weight, that catapults spaceships from earth orbit into the depths of space.

@Sanja Glavasevic you are correct. But what is this? An object to make space travel easier because *We don't have good space abilities YET* This is in-efficiant if we had good space abilitties. Good cheap rockets. and so on. This is a bad idea if we had good travel capabilities. We have no need for this if we have good rockets. BUT untill then this will do. Besides it will take a long time to craft into mars.

Kurzgesagt really should start a yearly convention for one of these achievable concepts, such as Tethers or the Moon Base. If you got Kurzgesagt fans to come along and actually made it a real event, it would get much more attention from the media and lots more people would be thinking about it! More awareness means more pressure on governments and companies to consider it, increasing the likelihood of it actually happening!

I get your enthusiasm, but the sources and literature you used are superficial regarding important questions. In particular, Moravec and co have only superficially analysed the long-term dynamics of the spinning skyhook. This dynamics is quite complicated I think, and one should be wary whether the hook's spin energy will not be drained over time due to tidal locking or something related. Conservation of angular momentum does not prohibit such a draining: it is the sum of the orbital angular momentum and the spin angular momentum which is conserved and there can be a flow from the latter angular momentum to the former. I have not seen literature or simulations which analyse this question and with some bad luck this might be a show-stopper, no?

@x -wing Sure, but this is a quantitative issue (not qualitative): how much proppelant do you need for that? What cost does it involve? On the qualitative side: can those thrusters survive those entries into the atmosphere over many cycles.

I guess the skyhook can sling objects to higher speed if it orbits the earth's equator in a direction opposite to the earth's spin. But since our space exploration has a history of bringing satellites in equatorial orbit in the same direction as the earth's spin, I guess this scenario for the skyhook is ruled out (for safety reasons: avoid collisions at extremely high velocity). Not sure though, I'm not an expert.

@x -wing as said in the video you have 60-90 second to catch a hook at mach 12 (14800 kmh or 4 kms) maybe even less time at greater speed because of spinning. its too much complicated, too much errors can occour. even a small error in our technology results in explosions as now. a space elevator is a building, the same threats of the skyhook but more simple
